We are lucky to live in the big city. I was reminded of this recently.
I just got back from big Oklahoma where I lived until a year ago. Had a great visit with my grandmother for a few days – she lives in a very small town with no stoplights, the Internet is a rare luxury, and there is no Walmart or Target. I didn’t even see a Sonic!
While there, I went to the grocery store in the next town to grab a few things to cook and maybe even a dessert or two. Forget quinoa, steel-cut oats, or organic anything!
I found very few items without our famous buzz words of “high fructose corn syrup” and “partially hydrogonated oils.” After roaming the ten-or-so aisles for a few minutes, I surrendered. I was on vacation, after all, so I stocked the cart with what they had.
Well, I am not a “perfect eater” by any means but I can tell you from experience, I definitely notice a difference eating good-for-you foods that are natural, not-so-processed, and containing fewer than 18 ingredients on the box. It didn’t take very long at all to feel like my energy was low, that I was easily tired, and to notice I was sleeping hours longer than I usually do. Must have needed it, as they say.
I had a fantastic time with my grandma, lots of laughs, and memories made – so after returning to Phoenix yesterday, I was feeling melancholy. But being able to visit our local grocery stores full of amazing nourishing foods helped ease the “pain” a little.
So that’s what made me feel very lucky about living here in the big city with many options and choices that help us take our health into our own hands. I’ll gladly return to my routine of “bin” digging for quinoa, almonds, oats, and more.
Hope to see you there!
