I sometimes refer to myself as the frustrated jock-turned-accountant. I always had aspirations to become a coach or physical education teacher, but I was warned that there was no money in that field. So I set my sights in another direction. When I first decided to pursue an accounting degree and ultimately get my CPA, I had no idea the options available to me. I simply desired to learn the language of business and have a major under my belt besides Business Administration.
Today, I feel incredibly fortunate for making that decision, as I am continually impressed by the number of avenues a CPA can take. To date, I’ve spent more than 20 years in the advertising, marketing and design industries working with amazingly creative people who have developed spectacular work for many well-known brands.
In addition, I have been fortunate to rub shoulders with some truly extraordinary people. Some of my former CPA colleagues have gone on to pursue careers with the FBI and are now experts in forensics accounting. Some have parlayed their CPA into lucrative positions as C-level executives for large multinational, public and private companies, as well as non-profit and government organizations.
I’ve known colleagues that have pursued careers in investment banking, commercial banking, and academia – or pursued their dreams of owning their own non-accounting business. Many colleagues continue to serve clients in tax, audit and consulting services as partners with large and small public accounting firms.
On top of all these career options, I must still believe there are opportunities for me to travel the world, make a lot of money, and even fulfill that athletic dream within me. Coach Whisenhunt is finally listening to the advice I bark at the TV, so maybe I’ll give him a call.
